Her first precious daughter, born in 2004, inspired Lucina founder Shauna Alexander Mohr to create a meaningful business collaborating with women and families in developing and war-torn countries. That mission came to life through Lucina Jewelry, named after the Roman goddess of light and birth.
Shauna had worked internationally for more than 10 years as a strategy and management consultant and fair trade coffee buyer. Her travels introduced her to skillfully handcrafted materials from fair trade workshops in Africa, Latin America and Asia. As a social entrepreneur, she saw the opportunity to partner with American designers to transform these enchanting components into an elegant, upscale collection of jewelry. Joined by designers Ronda Kelly and Scarlet Chamberlin, Shauna launched the Lucina Jewelry in fall 2005.
Lucina is the culmination of Shauna’s experience and passions: her expertise in fair trade commerce, her graduate degree in environmental economics from Yale University, her work nurturing small businesses in Latin America, and her love of exquisite jewelry. Shauna believes that smart, soulful businesses can transform lives and be an engine of world benefit. She’s proving it through Lucina.
Ronda Kelly has been designing jewelry since 1989. Prior to joining Lucina, she built a successful line under her own name that sold in upscale boutiques nationwide. Passionate about the cultural history of the materials she uses, Ronda couldn’t resist the opportunity to join Lucina Jewelry, which infused her creative efforts with a new sense of awareness and compassion. She serves as Lucina Jewelry’s Vice President and Design Director.
Scarlet Chamberlin began her jewelry design career at the age of 13, creating custom pieces for boutiques in Portland, Oregon. Years later, working as a doula (birth attendant), she fashioned rose quartz and amethyst into a bracelet for a laboring mother to wear. This experience reignited her passion for jewelry, and brought her to Lucina, which she hopes will lead to a healthier and more peaceful life for families around the world. Scarlet's jewelry, including pieces designed for Lucina, was shown with the Sofada line at New York Fashion Week in February 2006.
